Further, I was born to a mother that couldn't support me. I bounced between houses - my grandmother, my aunt, my father. Guess what? I'm fine. I just got accepted into an excellent university and will be attending this coming fall. Is life without challenges? No. Do I have to deal with it? Yes. But where do you get off deciding whose life is worth living and whose isn't? Further, what did the OP state that made you think she was living in poverty and wouldn't be able to support a kid? She's talking to her mother, yes, but she could be home visiting. We don't know her age or her lifestyle.
I support abortion on a case-by-case basis, before any of you ask. I can understand where a child just can't thrive at all in certain environments. I get that. An unplanned pregnancy is no good news, I know, but that doesn't mean your wide generalizations about "all mothers bringing an unplanned kid into the world deserve to die" or "death is better than adoption" are even half thought-out or remotely justified. If that dimwitted logic was somehow enforced, I wonder how many useful, brilliant minds would be lost.

Thank God you aren't in charge of the country. I know more than one girl who got pregnant unexpectedly and had no help from the father and their kids are doing well. The first couple years were rough but the Mom made it work. Besides young girl doesn't always = poor and married couple doesn't = stable.

How is this a FML? Unless you're pregnant I don't see the problem here. It really isn't hard to not get pregnant; don't have sex. It seems you're pretty young, probably a teenager, living with your mother and her controlling you, so just don't have sex yet....

Onigiriqueen, saying that being adopted is somehow second-rate is insulting to every adopted child and every adoptive parent. I know people who have adopted kids, and they love them like their own. Not all families do that, unfortunately, but a bad parent is a bad parent no matter whether their kids are biological or not. After all, my MIL decided to keep her first child (my husband) and thinks she's an awesome person for that. But then she let him be sexually abused for several years because she was happy to have anybody take him off her hands, and when he was older she physically abused him and his younger brothers. His life really couldn't have gotten much worse. He would have been better off adopted. On the other hand, his stepfather never tried to hurt him in any way, and I think cares more, in his own way, about my husband's well-being than his mother does.
Once more, a bad parent is a bad parent. It makes no difference if their kids are biological or not.

One of my best friends from high school and my sister in law are adopted. They're great people--the former happily admitted that he was a "love child" and regularly referred to himself as an "adopted b******", and the latter is just one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of meeting. It's not surprising that my brother fell in love with her--she teaches elementary children, for crying out loud. The same ones who support a political party opposed to childcare subsidies, the Family Medical Leave Act, pay equity, and universal health care, that all would help struggling families. There are many reasons why adoption isn't always the best alternative. Sometimes something as simple as the many health complications of pregnancy, especially with young mothers.
The entire abortion debate is moot. Abortions happened when illegal. The countriest with the lowest rates of abortion have it legalized. Many countries that suddenly illegalize abortion suffered heavy motherhood and infant mortality rates (like Romania). SAFE, LEGAL, AND RARE.

I'm adopted - as is my brother. My adoptive parents couldn't have children due to medical complications. I was born a 15 year old woman living on welfare. If you're going to sit there and try to convince me that killing me would've been a better option than giving me to a family that's both financially and emotionally stable enough for a child, you're an idiot. I've been in adoption groups (because my parents thought it help me learn about the process), and nobody I've never known has though "what's wrong with me that I had to be given up for adoption?" Sure, maybe you do when you're about 10. But by you're my age, 20, you fully understand that your birthmother gave you up because she knew she couldn't give you the life you deserved. I have everything I need/want and more. My parents love me. This IS my family. While I appreciate the choice my birthmother made, I've never felt alienated or different just because I'm adopted.
If you get pregnant and you're actually selfish enough to think "I don't want the inconvenience of carrying a child for nine months", so be it. But keep your mouth shut about adoption, because it's more than clear that you know absolutely nothing about it.

The children who end up in orphanages are a direct result of the birthparents not spending enough time and effort into finding the correct adoption agency to file the child through. The adoption agency does the work for you. For example, my birth mother went through Catholic Social Services of Wayne County, MI - and specifically requested that I be placed in a Catholic home.. and could even request the annual income of the family I was placed with.
As with any type of organization, there are good agencies and bad agencies. MOST of those kids who have traumatic adoptive experiences are a result of private adoptions OR failure to research the agency before giving the kid away.

I know this is kinda unrelated to the FML, but I think abortion is only acceptable (not OKAY, but acceptable) in the case that the mother and/or the child's life is endangered. About the 9 year old getting raped thing, she is obviously not going to be physically ready to have a baby, and she could die during the process, therefore it is acceptable for her to have an abortion, although it may prevent her from having children in the future (abortions are very risky that way). But if a girl who most likely IS physically ready (say 15, 16 years old) gets raped, she should have the baby, because it is not the baby's fault in any way that she was raped; it shouldn't have to suffer for some disgusting criminal's actions. Babies do feel pain during abortions, so don't try to say they aren't suffering. Alright, I'm done here.

As far as abortion- case by case. If it's just "I decided I want to kill it without getting in trouble", then um... yeah. But in most cases it can be easily justified if you place yourselves in their shoes (and, more importantly, their mind frame). The majority of you can go chew out people who waste sperm and whatnot, kthxbai.
And 198/pewpz... it's people like you that annoy me in these cases. Do you really think that the mother wouldn't be disgusted, horrified and maybe even in danger because of these emotions throughout the pregnancy? For one thing, she wouldn't be able to live with herself, most likely, and it highly depends on her emotional well-being. For another, on your terms, emotional stress (especially of that sort) can actually put a person in danger (even when they aren't pregnant), which would put the baby in danger as well. If she decides to have it, good for her and I would wish her health and strength through the process, but if she decides to have an abortion, you have no right to tell her she was wrong. If you were to do so in my presence I would slam your face into the nearest wall so fast you wouldn't even realize it until your teeth fell out. HER choice, HER reasons, HER peace of mind/lack thereof. There is no "what if" good enough for telling her that one of the biggest (and most traumatic) decisions of her life was wrong. Thank you for wasting my time and getting me to actually respond to your bullshit, goodbye.

Guys, I know what you're saying about how teen mothers should be respected, but:
A) They're generally asking their parents to support another person. Or the government. It's unlikely that they'll get a full-time job and pay for daycare when they're still in school, and be able to afford decent housing, clothing, and food for the kid and themselves. How is it fair that other people support their poor decision-making and the consequences of that decision? How are they going to afford the medical bills, or take care of a Special Needs kid? What if the baby is born with a harelip and needs surgery? Or needs to stay in the NICU for a bit.
B) They generally have trouble pursuing their own dreams. How many teen mothers are doctors and lawyers? Backpacked through Europe? Speak 5 languages? Come on. I get the number of kids who are saying how their mothers were unwed teenage mums and how they turned out fine, but did your mother do what she wanted? Seriously? Without violating A?
Plus, the people who say abortion is only okay if it endangers the mother's life... there are other factors. A 10yo and an 11yo can often bring to term, especially given the level of care offered in first world countries. It's going to destroy their bodies, sure, but technically they'll recover. They'll have the post-pregnancy damage, except accelerated, but still. Isn't the psychological and emotional damage to a girl of any age forced to bring a child into the world before she's ready important? Besides that, there are so many children in the world already, and there just isn't enough resources to go around. Still, adoption is fine. If you're worried about genetics the baby can get tested by the adoptive parents so no surprises like Huntington's will crop up. It's some $399 USD, an adoptive family can easily pay that.
If I'm studying as a med student and I get knocked up because, hey, condoms and BCP failed, despite being married I am not dropping out of school to give birth, and I can't afford the time and effort - or money - to raise a child right now. I don't have the time to be pregnant or give it up for adoption. I will also lose my scholarships - which, in effect, will destroy my education and career. I need to know there's a Plan B, or I'll never be able to have sex with my husband. :( There must be a choice for whom it's necessary.

Geez, chill the fuck out. Most people don't have an actual sex talk with their parents so don't act like a little 2 year old because you didn't. And even though your mom is crazy, I HIGHLY doubt she meant it, but if she did then try moving in with your other relatives. If you don't have anyone else and TRULY fear for you life, tell some authorities, teachers, etc that you wish to not live with your mother anymore, and instead with another guardian/person.
But if you're so TOTALLY concerned about your mom killing you and your baby if you ever get knocked up when you're just a TEENAGER (which is a KID), then you deserve it for being a whore and opening up your legs to get fucked when you're just a kid. And especially when you can't financially support another living being.

1) Adoptions aren't all bad. My cousin is adopted and she's perfectly fine.
