Yeah Ive never heard of a phone that expensive shattering from a short drop. Ive had friends drop iPhones and Blackberrys and at most they ended up with a cracked screen (which is usually an easy fix).
Next time at least get a protective case ;)
Maybe it wasn't a short drop. Or it could have just landed on something sharp? Or on the edge? Who knows.
You're right, a couple bucks on a case would have saved you a whole lot of money in the long run, but hey, its your money.

Actually, #146, the iPhone isn't as hard to break as you seem to think. I'm an iPhone owner and I drop my phone almost daily. Once I dropped my phone on asphalt while walking to my car after class and cracked the screen. I easily replaced the screen myself since it wasn't covered under warranty. I've dropped it puddles of water twice, a glass of iced tea once and glass of soda once. I'm sure I've done other stuff to it too. Guess what? It still works as well as it did the day I got it. And I don't use a case. I don't intend on using one, either. Some day I'll do something to my phone that'll kill it completely and I'll just use that as an excuse to get the new iPhone that I really want.
Also, I must add, that I have numerous friends with the iPhone as well. A couple of them have managed to crack the screen, but aside from that their phones are fine too.
Well, so if you are a businessman traveling every day, you buy
a navigation system for $200
a Netbook/Notebook for at least $200 for checking mails
a UMTS-Stick for at least $50 for getting online
an organiser for getting your calender managed for at least $100
If you want to play some 3D-games, you buy a PSP for at least $150
A MP3-Player with some GB of memory for $50
Maybe something to watch videos while driving - >$100
Oh, maybe also something that warns you about radar traps - don't know, at least $50?
Oh, and yes, a mobile phone to call your friends using your Bluetooth headset - $40 ;)
Just some points why buying a phone for $400 could be a good move ;)

I drop my cellphone all the time, and it breaks into pieces. But I just pop the pieces back together (keypad, battery and battery cover) and it's good as new. Are you sure it's BROKEN, and not just fallen apart? Did you even try to put it back together?
Cell phones are battle-tested. They should be able to withstand being dropped a few times. YDI for having a glass phone.
BTW was that woman hot? She sure sounds sassy enough.

Even if they did have warranty and even though the joke the woman made was funny, breaking a phone still sucks because most of the time you have to wait to get a new phone shipped to you after you file a claim. Hell, unless the phone breaking was a manufacturing defect, something like this wouldn't be covered under warranty so this person might be out of a phone until they can buy a new one. Also, you lose all the texts, photos, videos and such that were on the old phone.

They are literally indestructable.
I've dropped mine ALL the time, and it's in amazing condition (save for a couple scratches!)

You know, I have never in my life gotten a phone that cost anything, let alone $400. I have had 3 perfectly good free-with-plan phones, and I have dropped them repeatedly, thrown them across the room, and I've never had anything break. The only thing that even remotely affected any of them was when i was at a beach with really fine sand on a super windy day, you can still feel that there is sand in every tiny seam on that one. but anyway. my phone does everything I want it to, and i'm not glued to it 24/7 like some people i know. So, pretty much I think I'm better off.

Also, YDI for not thanking that lady for the best laugh I've had in a week! That pun is too hilarious to pass up, so I don't blame her. Imagine if she didn't say it to you, she would be itching to say it to the next person she saw but it still wouldn't have been as funny.
((As far as the phone comments go, my phone cost me $50 and it has survived many, many drops and the occasionally slam or throw into a wall. A previous phone of the same model stopped working after I dropped it one too many times, but it was still intact, and Virgin Mobile replaced it for free.))
So go ahead and keep buying your ridiculously expansive and ridiculously fragile "smart" phones and complain when you are careless enough to break a $400 piece of equipment. (I only own one thing worth that much; a guitar amp that I take VERY good care of.)
